Steven Houser, Ph.D., FAHA talks about his goals as the American Heart Association president for 2016-2017.  He is senior associate dean of research at Temple University in Philadelphia, Penn.

My goals
My goals are to promote the discovery of new knowledge that can help us to better understand the causes of cardiovascular disease and stroke. My belief is that discovery science forms the basis for the next set of cures for disease. I also will be a strong proponent for the training of the next generation of cardiovascular scientists and physicians.
Why I volunteer for the American Heart Association
When I was in my graduate student training years, my father developed heart failure and died prematurely at age 51, secondary to a heart attack. At that point, I changed my research interests to the study of cardiovascular disease and became a volunteer for the American Heart Association, so my science is aligned with my volunteer work, both related to reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and stroke.
My Why
My father's premature death from cardiovascular disease has been and will continue to be my why, why I'm so passionate about trying to help others so that they can live longer, healthier, more productive lives.
